Best Practices, Future Directions

Current approaches to globalizing UGC are somewhat scattered and formative, but they are beginning to provide value. Globalization can be addressed by content creators, in push modes, or by content consumers, in pull modes.

Pull modes include on-demand machine translation and reference tools suited to nonspeakers and second-language speakers of the source text language.

Push modes share the condition that human-quality translations are provided proactively, but they differ in who produces the translations and how and under what terms they are produced. On the free side of the spectrum are self-sourced, friendsourced, and crowdsourced translations. On the for-hire side of the spectrum are marketplace and LSP translation and transcreation services.

The choice of best translation modes depends principally on the content type, but also on considerations of audience, timeliness, budget, and access to translators. Examples of different forms of UGC and best-suited globalization options will be given.
