As 2019 winds down, it’s natural to spend some time thinking about the year that was and the new year that’s upon us. It’s an opportunity for self-reflection, and a great time to set some resolutions about what you plan to do differently next year. And while deciding on the right New Year’s resolutions is probably pretty easy in your personal life, figuring out which ones to make in your professional life might require a bit of inspiration.
To help, we’ve compiled some of our favorite content resolutions. Depending on your situation, some of them may ring more true than others. Read through them, decide which are most applicable to your situation, and commit to the ones that make most sense.
Resolution #1: Work Smarter, Not Harder
We all know the saying, “measure twice, cut once.” Fundamentally, it’s about taking the time to properly plan, so you get the results you want. As you think about 2020 and the results you need from your content, it’s important to adopt a similar mindset — so you can work smarter and not harder.
Practically speaking, that means having a solid strategy that sets you up for success and brings focus to your work. It also means finding ways to leverage technology to help you automate parts of your job. That could include using a social media management platform to coordinate the promotion of your content, or some analytics tools to measure its effectiveness. It could also mean using a platform like Acrolinx, so it’s easier to create content that’s aligned with your strategy and brand.
Resolution #2: Try New Things
Whether you’re a content rockstar or are still trying to hit your stride, it’s always important to experiment and try new things. If you’re only taking a rinse-and-repeat approach to content creation, you risk having your content grow stale. Not only should you challenge yourself so you stay excited about the content you’re creating, it’s also really important to keep your audience engaged. After all, if you’re bored with your content, your audience probably will be too. So experiment with new topics, new content formats, or maybe even an updated tone of voice. The bottom line is that if you’re not finding ways to keep your content fresh, you and your customers are both going to suffer.
Resolution #3: Focus on the Right Metrics
It’s no secret that metrics matter. But have you been paying attention to the right ones? It’s easy for content creators to get caught up in vanity metrics like page views, likes, and shares that don’t actually mean that much. A better idea is to focus on the metrics that truly matter to your company’s bottom line, such as conversion metrics. If you haven’t been tracking and analyzing how your content is performing, 2020 is the year to start. Need help? Our guide to content analytics will give you all the support you need.
Resolution #4: Get Serious About SEO
SEO is something on every content creator’s radar, but that doesn’t mean it gets the attention it deserves. Make 2020 the year that you win the main keywords that matter for your company. While optimizing all of your web pages is a good place to start (and here’s some basic advice on how to do that), to win the war for first page rankings on Google, you need to take a more advanced approach. That includes creating pillar pages for the keywords you want to win. They should host all of the related content you have that relates to those keywords. Neil Patel offers some great advice about how pillar pages work here.
Resolution #5: Embrace Active Content Governance
If you’re creating content at enterprise scale, then you know the challenges that presents. If you want to find a way to work more efficiently, save time and money, ensure consistency and brand alignment, and increase the quality of your content, then embrace content governance in 2020. Active Content Governance is a framework for content creation that promotes alignment and clarity, streamlines processes, and sets you up to produce measurable, quality content. Everyone involved in the content process can lean on its structures for support, guidance, and efficiency, making your content operations much more effective
