Winner of Acrolinx/Content Rules 10 millionth word prize is long-time volunteer, Carine Toucand

DANBURY, CT USA – 28 May 2013. The world’s leading non-profit translation organization, Translators without Borders (TWB) is proud to announce the translation of the 10 millionth word through the organization’s Translators without Borders Workspace. The 10 million words, which is the equivalent of approximately $2 million in global aid, were translated by professional volunteers over the past two years in 99 language pairs for 119 humanitarian organizations.

To celebrate, Translators without Borders awarded the translator who delivered the 10 millionth word, Carine Toucand, a special $1000 prize sponsored jointly by Acrolinx and Content Rules. Carine has contributed more than 53,000 words to TWB and is a ProZ.com certified PRO translator. The translation concerned maternal mortality for one of the organization’s non-profit partners, ACHAP.

The Workspace, powered by ProZ.com and adopted by Translators without Borders in early 2011, connects professional translators volunteering their time with non-profit humanitarian organizations in an effort to increase access to knowledge through translation.

“Access to information in the right language saves lives,” said Lori Thicke, founder of Translators without Borders. “After many years of working hard to get the right people and systems in place, we’ve delivered 10 million translated words to help people around the world access the knowledge they need to improve their lives.” Lori continued, “That’s 10 million words translated for Syrian refugees, doctors in Haiti, mothers in India and care workers in Indonesia. I’d like to thank all of our awesome translators and all the TWB team – today we should all feel proud of ourselves. Next stop – 20 million.”

While celebrating this significant milestone, the TWB team also recognizes there is much more to do. The next ten million words await translation, and the organization is trying to scale to reach the 20 million word milestone even sooner. The 20 Million Word Challenge asks new and renewing sponsors to join TWB now to help reach 20 million words for humanity.

About Translators without Borders
Translators without Borders, a US-based 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, envisions a world where knowledge knows no barriers. The mission of Translators without Borders (initially founded in France in 1993 as Traducteurs sans Frontières) is to provide people access to vital knowledge in their language by connecting nonprofit organizations with our community of translators, building local language capacity and raising awareness about language barriers. Translators without Borders volunteers translate millions of words each year, focusing on three types of humanitarian translations: crisis translations needed urgently to inform people in crisis, translations that support an NGO’s operations, and translations that directly support people in need. The organization is building language capacity in East Africa through its first translator training center in Nairobi, Kenya, where trainees focus on healthcare content in Kiswahili and acquire the skills for a career in translation.
